Ruherienne Ships In for Win in Grade II Nassau Stakes
The last Saturday in May at Woodbine Racetrack brought an excellent clash of fillies and mares in the $300,000 Grade II Nassau Stakes. Christophe Clement trainee, Rutherienne, with rider Alan Garcia aboard, would cross the wire in a time of 1:41.89 over the E.P. Taylor turf course, seeing the daughter of Pulpit go on to capture her tenth lifetime victory.
It appeared to be a good day for the southern invaders at Woodbine race track this Saturday as morning-line favorite Rutherienne would take the wire, earning herself another $180,000 closer to the million dollar mark. Jockey Alan Garcia would keep his five-year-old mare just off the early pace; eventually settling in just off the rail in third position before the half-mile pole. With foes Meadow Star and Remarkable Remy fighting it out on the front end of the turn, Garcia and Rutherienne would bide their time until they hit the top of the stretch and Garcia began to encourage his horse to get up in between the leaders, after losing the inside hole. Rutherienne obeyed her rider and put herself in gear just after the eighth-pole, as Remarkable Remy would give way on Rutherienne's left and then Rutherienne would take away Meadow Star's short lead, driving toward the wire and getting away from her foes. The three length victory would come over a very late surging Callwood Dancer, who would be boxed in until finding room in the last sixteenth of a mile, passing Meadow Star who would hold for a show placing.
Jockey Alan Garcia would talk of his mare and how they were able to accomplish the feat, "She was a little easier this start, and ever thing was set up and my filly, she was conservative until the top of the stretch. We started looking for room and she got the room. It was clear and she just took off, she started running good."
