El Brujo and Husbands Prevail in 54th Edition of the Queenston Stakes
It was another great finish for rising star El Brujo in the 54th edition of the Queenston Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack this past Saturday, May 2nd, 2009. With Patrick Husbands up, the duo would get their second straight stakes victory of the young '09 season at the Toronto oval.
El Brujo continued a spectacular start of the season winning the Queenston by one and one-quarter lengths over rival Shut It Down, who would yield to the son of Candy Ride(ARG) down the stretch, giving way at the sixteenth pole. It was a good start for El Brujo out of the gate where he would break sharply and settle in behind front-runner Shut it down. The first quarter would be fairly relaxed in :23.81 and El Brujo would use this to his advantage as Patrick Husbands would ask the big bay gelding to make a bid at the start of the turn. It would become a two horse race at the turn as El Brujo would go shoulder to shoulder with foe Shut It Down and rider Jim McAleney and they would come into the stretch fighting for the lead. By the eighth pole El Brujo and Husbands would begin to inch ahead of Jimmy Mac and Shut It Down, who would finally yield to El Brujo by the sixteenth pole, getting away for the victory in a final time of 1:22.17. Active Duty and Bucephalus would finish a distant third and forth respectfully.
Husbands would later say of the triumph, "He left the gate relaxed and I was a little bit scared, four and a half out and Jim was getting everything his way, so we had to pull the trigger. It took so much out of my horse, pulling the trigger from so far out, but, he still got the job done and I think we can guarantee he(El Brujo)can get two turns."
